Best Luggage Options for Train Travel in 2026

I’m planning a train trip through Italy and it’s got me thinking about the best luggage to use. With so many stops and transfers, I realize that having the right luggage can really impact the experience. I’ve tried both hard-shell suitcases and soft duffel bags in the past, but I’m unsure which would be better for maneuvering through train stations and fitting in storage compartments.

Space is always a concern on trains, so I need something that’s lightweight but also offers enough room. I’ve come across some travel-specific backpacks, but I’m worried they might not provide enough stability or protection for my things. Has anyone found a brand or style that works particularly well for train journeys? Or are there features I should be looking for that I haven’t thought of yet?

What luggage do you prefer for train travel, and why does it work for you?

I’ve had decent luck with a soft-sided backpack that has some structure. It’s lightweight but still protects my stuff pretty well, plus it’s way easier to maneuver in crowded stations. Look for one with a good hip belt, though—makes a big difference when you’re hauling it around.

I get what you’re saying about the space issue. I’ve used a carry-on size soft shell backpack and loved it for train travel. It’s lightweight and has enough pockets for organization, plus it fits really well in those overhead compartments. Just make sure it has good straps for comfort when you’re lugging it around!
