Flights of Stairs: How Do They Compare to a Mile?

Navigating cities with different elevations can be quite the workout! For those who enjoy hiking or walking in places like Iceland, understanding how many flights of stairs equal a mile can be really helpful.

Typically, one flight of stairs is about 10 to 12 feet high. That means you’d need to climb around 500 to 600 flights to cover a mile. How do you keep track of your stair climbing while traveling, or do you have other methods for measuring your activity?

Let’s share our experiences! What tips do you have for staying active while exploring new destinations?

When I was in San Francisco, I used a fitness tracker to count my steps and flights. It helped a lot, especially because the city has those steep hills! I’d also just set goals for myself like walking a certain amount every day, which kept me moving while enjoying the views.

I usually just rely on my fitness tracker to keep tabs on stair climbs when I’m traveling. It’s super handy! But if I’m hiking, I just focus on enjoying the views rather than counting; sometimes it’s more about the experience than the numbers, right?
