How to Make the Most of a Week in Greece

Planning a week in Greece can feel overwhelming, especially if you want to see everything without rushing. With so many beautiful islands and historical sites, creating a speedy itinerary that includes both the must-visit spots and some hidden treasures is tricky. Should you stick to the mainland or hop around the islands? What’s the best way to travel in between?

From my experience, starting in Athens is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and history before heading out to the islands. While Santorini is breathtaking, I wonder if it’s worth sacrificing time for other fantastic places like Naxos or Crete. Plus, getting familiar with the local transport can save you a lot of time. What tips do you have for first-timers navigating the transit systems?

How do you strike a balance between relaxation and sightseeing when your time is short? What are your favorite week-long itineraries in Greece?

I went to Greece last summer and honestly, picking just a couple of islands is key. Naxos was awesome for chill time and good food, while Mykonos gave me a fun vibe. I took the ferries, and they were surprisingly fast! If you can, maybe spend more days on fewer islands to really soak it in instead of rushing around.

Starting in Athens makes total sense; there’s so much to see! If you’re hopping to the islands, I found Naxos way less touristy than Santorini and the beaches are awesome. For getting around, ferries can be nice, but don’t underestimate the flying options—they can save hours! Balancing sightseeing and chill time is tough, but maybe mix in a beach day after hitting the ruins?
