How to Make the Most of a Week in Iceland

Planning a week in Iceland can be a bit daunting with so many amazing sights to explore. With only a limited amount of time, how do you decide which activities to include in your itinerary? It feels like a balancing act between visiting the iconic Golden Circle, relaxing at the Blue Lagoon, and taking in the stunning views along the South Coast.

From my experience, having a detailed map and a flexible plan really helps me make the most of my time while still allowing for some spontaneous adventures. For those who have visited recently, what strategies do you recommend for a packed week? Are there any hidden gems along the way that you think I should check out that won’t take me too far off my planned route?

What are the must-see activities I shouldn’t miss, and how can I steer clear of the typical tourist traps? I’m eager to hear your insights!

Definitely check out the Sólheimasandur plane wreck if you can! It’s a bit of a hike but super worth it for the photos. And if you’re already in the South Coast area, try to squeeze in a stop at Gljúfrabúi—it’s like a hidden waterfall that’s easy to miss but so magical. Avoiding the major crowds can make such a difference!

You should definitely check out the Snaefellsnes Peninsula if you have some extra time. It’s like a mini-Iceland with glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand beaches, plus it’s way less crowded than the Golden Circle. Just be ready for some driving, but the views are totally worth it!
