Should Expats Use a Tour Agency in London?

Planning a trip to London can feel overwhelming, especially for expats eager to immerse themselves in local culture. There are countless neighborhoods to explore, which can make it tempting to just go with the flow. But I’m curious if partnering with a tour agency might elevate the experience, especially when it comes to discovering unique photography spots and hidden gems not covered in conventional guidebooks.

On one hand, a tour agency can offer valuable insights and access to lesser-known attractions and experiences that deepen your connection with the city. On the other hand, it might feel restrictive if you prefer to explore spontaneously at your own pace.

Have any of you tried using a tour agency in London? Would you recommend it to someone wanting to find a balance between guided tours and personal exploration? What was your experience like?

I think it really depends on what you’re after. I tried a local tour agency once, and they did show us some cool spots, but honestly, I preferred wandering around on my own in neighborhoods like Shoreditch where you just stumble upon street art and cafes. Maybe mix both? Like do a tour for the less obvious stuff and then explore solo for the rest.

I think using a tour agency has its perks, especially for finding those off-the-beaten-path spots. I went on a street art tour and discovered some amazing hidden murals that I wouldn’t have found solo. But yeah, it’s a bummer if you like to wander at your own pace. Maybe try a mix? Like book a couple of tours but leave some days free for exploring!
