Tips for Planning a 5-Day Itinerary in Tokyo

Planning a five-day trip to Tokyo can be daunting with so much to explore. The city is packed with vibrant neighborhoods, delicious food, and unique cultural experiences, making it hard to decide what to prioritize. For those who prefer a slower pace and want to soak it all in, how do you choose your must-see spots without feeling rushed?

I’ve been researching different routes and public transit to make the most of my time. For instance, would it be better to spend a day in Shibuya and Harajuku and then focus on the historic Asakusa area another day? I’m also curious about any hidden gems that offer a more local experience.

Do you tend to pick a theme for each day, like food or art? What strategies do you use to fit everything in while keeping the experience relaxed? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’m all about picking a theme for each day! Last time, I did a food day that focused on different neighborhoods, and it was awesome. Shibuya and Harajuku are perfect for that vibe, plus, Asakusa’s great for some historic sights and casual eats. Just make sure to leave a bit of time to wander around and get lost in the alleyways—found some super cool local spots that way!

I totally get the struggle! When I was in Tokyo, I chose a theme for each day, too. Like one day was all about food—hit up Tsukiji Market for sushi and then found some awesome street food in Shibuya. It made it a lot easier to stay focused without feeling scattered. Hidden gems? Try the older neighborhoods around Yanaka; they’ve got a cool vibe and less touristy spots.
