What are the best photography spots in Japan for 2026?

I’m getting ready for a photography trip to Japan, and it’s both thrilling and a bit daunting with all the choices. Should I focus on well-known spots like the temples in Kyoto, or should I seek out hidden gems in the smaller towns? It’s especially tricky since cherry blossom season is approaching.

I’m keen to capture both Japan’s traditional architecture and its lively street scenes. Given my travel schedule this year, I’m looking for tips on how to make the most of my time to get the best photos. Do any of you have a method for picking your photography locations? What resources or websites do you find useful for planning your shoots?

For cherry blossoms, definitely hit up Kyoto’s temples, but also check out spots like Hirosaki Castle—it’s stunning and less crowded. I usually use Google Maps to scout places and then look at Instagram for recent pics from those spots. Just keep an open mind, some of the best shots come from wandering around!

Definitely check out the temples in Kyoto, but don’t skip the smaller towns like Takayama! I was there last year during cherry blossom season, and the vibe was just magical, plus the streets are super photogenic. For planning, I used a mix of Instagram and local photography blogs to find less crowded spots. You’ll want to mix it up to get the best of both worlds!
