What are the best road trip routes in Italy?

Planning a road trip through Italy can feel daunting with so many beautiful routes available. With so many options, it can be tough to know where to start! What do you consider when mapping out your journey? Are you more inclined to drive along the stunning coastlines, visit historical sites, or explore off-the-beaten-path locations that usually don’t make it into guidebooks?

I’m also eager to hear about your personal experiences. Have you discovered any particular roads or areas that are exceptional in terms of scenery or cultural importance? I’m looking for recommendations on must-see stops that truly enhance the road trip experience. What tips do you have for making the most of every mile?

I’d say while the coastlines are gorgeous, there’s something special about the countryside roads, like the ones through Tuscany. The rolling hills and vineyards can’t be beat! Also, try to check out smaller towns along the way; you might stumble upon some hidden gems that aren’t in the usual guidebooks.

I did a road trip from Florence to the Amalfi Coast last summer, and it was amazing! The drive along the coast is just unreal—tight turns, stunning views, and cute little towns like Positano. Don’t skip stopping at random roadside restaurants for the best homemade pasta; you won’t regret it! Also, plan for plenty of breaks since the views will definitely make you want to pull over.
